Sainsbury’s said it will save 450 tonnes of plastic each year by replacing plastic packaging from its beef mince range with a vacuum-packed alternative.
The new packaging, which uses around 55 per cent less plastic, is part of Sainsbury’s wider plans to half the use of plastic packaging in its own brand products by 2025.
Sainsbury’s, which claims it is the first retailer to vacuum pack its beef mince range, says that the chance of spoilage is lowered as all oxygen is removed and that the packs are smaller which makes them easier to store.
Commenting on the news Claire Hughes, director of product and innovation at Sainsbury’s, said: “We know our customers expect us to be reducing the use of plastic across our products are and we're constantly looking for new ways to innovate to meet our Plan for Better plastic reduction targets.”
The supermarket recently announced that it is partnering with Just Eat for home delivery of its products. Customers will be to order milk, vegetables, and household essentials from participating Sainsbury’s stores via the delivery app.
